Year 2, week 49: The Dirty Book Club

This week's book:
The Dirty Book Club
By Lisi Harrison

This week's book I thought would be a good summer read. I don't really remember where I heard about it, but I know I ordered it from eBay forever ago. As the title states, it's about a dirty book club. There are two sets of friends who meet together once a month to read a book that they deem dirty. The club starts in the 1960's with four high school friends, and then gets passed down to a new set of women about fifty years later.

I really had high hopes and was sort of disappointed with the book. I always say I need to relate to one of the characters, and in this book I just didn't relate to anyone. I don't know if it was because I'm getting super pregnant and am super tired, but it took me a while to get through this book that should have been a super fast read.

I would recommend this book if you need total mind candy and want a quick read.

Year 2, week 48: Quilts

This (last) week's projects:
Quilts
By Me

This is super late, sorry. Last week was my honey's and my ninth wedding anniversary, and my sweet sister took the kiddos so we could have a little time for just the two of us. My hubby still had to work so I finished some quilts that were really close to being done for a while. I have to be in the right mood to quilt and I haven't had the energy or felt good enough to quilt for a while. I can't post all of the quilts because some of them will be for babies that haven't been born yet (some maybe not even made). But I will post some that have gone to the prayer quilt ministry at our church. I realize I haven't posted some of these quilts in a while, so here they are.

Year 2, week 47: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

This week's book:
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time
By Mark Haddon

I'm trying my best here. I'm into my third trimester and it's summer vacation so the kids are both home and trying to kill each other. This is the fourth time I'm pregnant in the hottest part of the year, I mean seriously are we sitting on the sun? I have been dying to be able to take the kids to the pool but it's just ungodly hot at the moment outside. Last year's summer pregnancy didn't work out, but I still felt like utter poop, being in what would have been my first trimester. July is one of the busiest months that we have every year. We have the fourth, little man's birthday, VBS, our wedding anniversary and many more things to come. I don't know why this pregnancy has hit me so much harder than the last two, I'm older, have two kids that I still want to take care of and this kid is just huge!!!!!!

I just realized I haven't talked about the book at all. I picked it up at the library as an audio book not knowing that it has a lot of not so appropriate words for little ears to hear. It was also on CD and guess what, our new van does not have a CD player. Oh yeah, we got a van a few weeks ago, I'm officially a Cookie Monster Blue colored van Mom. I returned the CD before finishing the book and ended up finishing it up later.

The story is about a boy from England with Autism and how he views the world. The book is very well written but I didn't really enjoy it nor do I recommend it.

Year 2, week 46: My Two Moms

This week's book:
My Two Moms: Lessons of Love, Strength, and What Makes a Family
By Zach Wahls

I meant to have read this book and reviewed it in June (Pride month) but time got away from me and so I'm a few days late, bummer.

This book is the story of Zach Wahls, a young man that became famous after a video of him was put on YouTube. On January 31, 2011 Mr. Wahls addressed the Iowa Judiciary Committee in a public hearing because they wanted to ban gay marriage. I remember watching the video on YouTube and being super impressed by this Iowa boy who was defending himself as a child who was raised by his two moms. The video isn't too long, but really well written. If you know me, you know I'm the child of two Hawkeyes, and in all honesty my sister and I are probably more Iowa kids than Hoosiers really.

When I had heard that Wahls had written a book, I went out and bought the book for my mom. As a Hawkeye and the lady that shaped my life, I thought it would be right up her alley. I don't think she ever got the chance to read it, her cancer battle became a pretty big fight. I also had my first child so reading this book was put on the back burner. It would have been cool to talk to her about the book before she passed, but to be honest there are a lot of other discussions I wish I could have had with her as well.

But back to the book: Wahls was/is a boy scout, and the way he set up his book follows many of the guidelines that the scouts follow, and then he connects these guidelines to how he was raised by his two moms. To be honest, the book didn't really grab me as much as I thought it would. He is quite a well spoken guy and I was not even a little surprised when I found out he got elected to the Iowa Senate, because he's one smart cookie. It wasn't until the last bit of the book that he really speaks from the heart, and you really can see what he stands for. I had forgotten he even spoke at the Democratic convention. I would recommend the book and really hope to see more from Mr. Wahls in the political field.
